Revere Council Panel Advances Rental Registry
Other Committee · Meeting of September 28, 2026
Revere panel advances a $25-a-year rental registry covering every unit in the city. The Legislative Affairs Subcommittee, chaired by Councilor Argenzio, voted to send the combined long-term and short-term rental registry and inspection ordinance to a public hearing, replacing a 1976 rule and the current $75 per-turnover inspection fee with free inspections on a five-year cycle. Councilor Michelle Kelly warned the measure could hit longtime homeowners with "30, 40 or $50,000" remediation bills if illegal units are discovered.
Resident Jim McCurrier, citing Census Bureau data on roughly 12,000 rental units citywide, asked "financially, can the city afford a program like this?" Staff said the city has only two inspectors now and would add one or two more, funded entirely by registry revenue. The subcommittee also voted 4-1 to shorten, from 10 years to one, the waiting period before a deceased person can have city property named after them.
